Learning Aussie Rules

Talking to the guys today during our offsite about Aussie Rules again, and its clear the rules, like with any new sport, is the problem.

I think this video should clear things up. So guys, do some prep, then I will bring the ball. <grin>

It came up by the way because I’m training tomorrow with the The Flying Dutchman!

Reconciliation

Outburst of emotion echoes across the land

It has been talked about for as long as I can remember, but without an apology, without saying “Sorry”, can it ever really be achieved?

Today, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, delivering on his promise, and on behalf of Australia, finally, finally said “Sorry”. The images on our televisions, even here in Amsterdam, were for the first time in a long time, showing what I believe is a true reflection of our beautiful country.

It is an incredible feeling to be so moved by so few words, but moved I have been. Lets hope that this is a new beginning for the process of reconciliation which has until now, not been given the prominence and respect it deserved.

“For the pain, suffering and hurt of these stolen generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.

“To the mothers and fathers, the brothers and sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.”

I feel this good!

Ice Skating

If the Dutch are amazing Ice Skaters. I remember going skating with Petra and her family last winter, and I learnt never to do it again. Not only did every member of her family appear to be Olympic standard, but every other person, including the 2 year olds, also looked Olympic standard.

To feel better, with Winter well and truly here, I thought I would dig up Australia’s greatest moment on ice. It’s a clip that shows an Aussie triumphing in the most Aussie of circumstances.

So, Stephen Bradbury, I salute you sir!
I can hold my head up in Holland thanks to your stunning Olympic Gold victory. Aus As!

Reading up about it, the thing that surprised me was that he actually got through the the final by winning a semi-final in very similar circumstances. So it wasn’t a fluke! <Grin>

Australia signs Kyoto Protocol

Finally, we have signed up. This is an example of another fresh new look at an issue that has been haunting Australian politics. This leaves the US out on their own as the only country not to sign on.

There are very few things that embarrass me as an Australian, but our treatment of the Aboriginal people and our failure to sign Kyoto certainly did. Within just days of coming to power Kevin Rudd has impacted on both these issues, giving me just a little more pride.

To the Indigenous people of our country, I’m Sorry.

This has been such a long time coming, and I can’t tell you how happy and relieved I am about this:

‘We will say sorry’: Rudd – Federal Election 2007 News – FederalElection2007

KEVIN Rudd has vowed to act quickly after he is sworn in as prime minister to make a formal apology to Aboriginal Australians on behalf of the nation.

I’m pleased that Australia has a new Prime Minister, that we have an opportunity to take a fresh look at issues which have haunted Australian politics for more than a decade.

I remember “Walking for Reconciliation” in 2000. I remember personally approaching an Aboriginal artist performing in Adelaides mall and saying “Sorry”. I remember John Howard, tirelessly claiming that we didn’t do it, and therefore we didn’t have anything to be sorry for.

Mr Howard, you were wrong. We, as a country did do it and we should have apologised long ago, and I look forward to this now coming day with hope.
